Bentley Continental Supersports Ice Speed Record clocks 205mph on ice

Think you're a speed demon? Think again. Finland's four-time World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen has defied all that is sensible by driving a convertible Bentley at 205.48mph -- on ice, across a frozen portion of the Baltic Sea.

This terrifying feat was achieved in a brand-new, limited-edition Bentley Continental Supersports dubbed the 'Ice Speed Record' (ISR). The car uses a tweaked version of Bentley's most powerful engine -- a 6-litre, twin turbo-charged W12 that, in this case, chucks out 631bhp and 800Nm (590lb-ft) of torque -- 10bhp more than the standard model.

The extra power comes courtesy of fine tuning using the help of computers, plus new 'free-breathing' air-intake ducts that pump extra air into the engine, a new intercooler system that keeps this air cool during combustion, and a new exhaust system.

Together, these changes help the Continental Supersports ISR hurtle from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds -- Ferrari 458 Italia territory -- and to 100mph from a standstill in 9.5 seconds.

The Continental Supersports ISR may be a snorting speed monster, but it doesn't sacrifice any of the luxury Bentleys are renowned for. Inside, it has the same infotainment system as the new Continental GT. Its nav system -- with an 8-inch display -- stores Google Maps data on a 30GB hard drive and can guide you to your destination using a 7-digit postcode or, cleverly, geo-tagged photos stored on an SD memory card.

Only 100 examples of the Bentley Continental Supersports ISR will be produced, so the closest you're likely to get to one is the pictures in our gallery.

That's just as well, really. If we owned one, we'd be tempted to take it down to our local ice rink to see what it's really made of.
