Toyota's flagship eco-car enters its fifth generation. Meet the 2023 Toyota Prius.

The new design still looks like a Prius, but the details and proportions are much more assertive.

Hammerhead lights lead the way with a design that echoes Toyota's bZ4X.

The Prius' roof is 2 inches lower than before. The seating position also drops by an inch.

Out back, a wider body emphasizes the Prius' wedge-shaped silhouette.

A larger 2.0-liter hybrid system and a more powerful battery imbue the Prius with up to 196 horsepower. Not bad for a car that used to only make 121 ponies.

The plug-in hybrid Prius Prime gets an even bigger bump to 220 horsepower. That's 100 hp more than the previous generation.

A yet larger lithium-ion battery extends the Prime's EV range by 50% over the previous model's 25 miles.

That works out to about 37 miles before the combustion engine kicks in, but we expect more detailed range and efficiency estimates next year.

One way to tell a Prius Prime from the standard model is the Solar Roof.

Toyota claims this panel will trickle-charge the traction battery while parked.
