2023 BMW i4 M50 Is the Strong, Silent Type

BMW's i4 electric sedan is based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The M50 steps up to a dual-motor electric all-wheel drive system.

Total output is stated at 536 horsepower with a rear-biased 586 pound-feet of torque.

19-inch wheels are standard with an option to upgrade to 20s with performance tires.

Up front, the 4 Series' open grille has been replaced by self-healing polymer panels. Small scratches disappear from the glossy surface after just a few warm days.

Aside from the grille, the i4 is indistinguishable from the gasoline-powered 4 Series.

Internally, the electric sedan hides its battery pack beneath the cabin floor, which costs it a bit of second-row and cargo space.

Depending on the wheels chosen, drivers can expect between 227 and 270 miles of range between charges.

At a Level 2 AC station, the 83.9-kilowatt-hour battery charges to full in 8.5 hours.

Plug into a 200-kW DC fast charger to rapidly charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. BMW includes 2 years of complimentary 30-minute Electrify America sessions for new i4 owners.

The M50 variant is, of course, more expensive than the single-motor i4 eDrive40 model and has less range. The extra power is so good, though.
