2022 BMW X4 M Competition Is a Neck-Snapper

The 2022 X4 M is the most hard-core variant of BMW's compact coupeover, meshing M car performance with an SUV's taller ride height.

The star of the show is the 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo I6 engine. Here, in Competition spec, it puts out 503 horsepower -- 30 ponies more than standard -- and 479 pound-feet of torque. 

The X4's coupelike roofline cuts a handsome profile, but costs the SUV a considerable amount of cargo and legroom when compared with the more upright X3. 

The lower roofline creates the illusion of a wider vehicle. The X4 is, however, actually 1.5 inches longer than the X3. 

If low-slung coupeovers are your thing, the X4 M is a handsome example. 

Larger 21-inch wheels improve the Competition spec's agility, but don't help the firm ride.

The Competition package adds $7,000 to the bottom line.
