The 2019 Toyota Highlander is a competent crossover

The Toyota Highlander underwent a design update in 2016, so not much is new for 2019.

Base prices for the 2019 Toyota Highlander start at $31,330 and reach $42,430 (plus $1,045 for destination) on the top-tier Limited trim.

Most Highlanders feature a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, but a four-cylinder is optional.

The four-cylinder is paired with a six-speed automatic and front drive only, while the V6 uses an eight-speed automatic that's connected to the front or all four wheels.

The V6 is actually the more fuel-efficient choice at up to 21/27 city/highway mpg. The best the four-cylinder can do is just 20/24 city/highway mpg.

There's enough room inside the Highlander for up to eight occupants.

Standard interior tech is a bit light, though, with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker stereo. An 8-inch touchscreen is available with a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system, but you can't get Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Standard driver-assistance features include collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams.

Maximum cargo space is 83.7 cubic feet. If you need to haul more, the Highlander offers 5,000 pounds of maximum towing.
