2019 Ford Ranger: Ford returns to midsize pickup truck fight

Ford abandoned the midsize pickup truck segment in the US following the 2011 model year, but will return with a new Ranger in 2019.  

Ford announced at last year's Detroit Auto Show that it was bringing the Ranger back to the US, but thankfully this year they actually showed the truck.

The new Ranger is a heavily reworked version of the truck already sold in other markets around the world.

The US-spec Ranger makes its world debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. 

Ford will offer the 2019 Ranger in SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles. 

Compared to current models sold elsewhere, the US Ranger features slight styling changes that included a more aggressive front fascia with a steel bumper.

Model-specific grilles and a new aluminum hood with dual power bulges also help distinguish the US Ranger from others. 

At the rear, there's an aluminum tailgate with a spoiler for better aero, a high-mounted handle borrowed from the F-150 and a frame-mounted steel bumper. 

The interior receives a new steering wheel and shifter and waterproof storage under the rear seats. 

For infotainment, Sync with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 devices is standard.     

The only confirmed engine at this time is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that is a modified for truck duty with a forged crankshaft and connecting rods comparable to the unit available in the Mustang.
