2018 BMW X2 steps out early in disguise
Small crossover will be similar to X1, but with more coupe-like styling.
BMW is teasing its new X2 small crossover SUV by parading it around in camouflage.
The crossover is expected to be based on BMW's front- and all-wheel-drive UKL platform. Today's X1 is only available in AWD in the States, so it's reasonable to expect the same for the X2.
The UKL platform already underpins today's Mini models and BMW's X1.
Don't expect much in the way of off-road capability, BMW is showing this vehicle off first in the city for a reason.
BMW has not confirmed the X2 for North America yet, but it would be shocking if it isn't sold here.
Expect the X2 to be equipped very much like BMW's X1, but cost a little more. Today's X1 starts at $33,900 plus $995 for destination.
The X2 is to the X1 as BMW's X4 is to the X3, and X6 is to the X5, meaning smaller inside and more expensive, but with more (alleged) style.
BMW says it's targeting "young, extrovert and active individuals" with the X2. That sounds exactly like the same audience every other automaker is targeting with their small crossovers.
Rumor has it that a convertible version is already under consideration.
BMW has not announced when it will finally show the X2, but given the timing of these teaser images, a September debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show feels like a good guess.
