2018 BMW 640i GT: A niche of all niches

The 2018 BMW 640i Gran Turismo is a vehicle that doesn't slot cleanly into any category.

It's like a sedan with a coupe roofline and a one-piece hatchback in the rear.

The Dynamic Handling Package comes with Integral Active Steering -- a fancy way of saying rear-wheel steering.

Under the hood is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine good for 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

That engine can motivate the GT to 60 miles per hour in a BMW-estimated 5.1 seconds.

Power goes down to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Apple CarPlay is available for $300. BMW has no plans to offer Android Auto.

The 6 Series Gran Turismo is the first BMW to come standard with the company's Active Driving Assistant, which incorporates a whole suite of aids like blind spot detection and lane departure warning.

The design gives it 65 cubic feet of space, more than the supposedly larger X6 crossover.
