2016 Volkswagen Passat debuts in New York (pictures)

Volkswagen's full-size Passat sedan gets a tech and style refresh for the 2016 model year.

Among a smattering of subtle changes, the model will get a new, sport-styled R-Line trim level.

The broad strokes of the Passat's design remain unchanged for 2016.

Upon closer inspection, the sedan now features tweaks to the design of its headlamps, grille and front bumper.

Out back, the trunk lid, rear bumper and tail lights are also massaged for 2016.

Inside, a new modular infotainment system now features Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink connectivity.

The North American market Passat diverged from the smaller European model years ago and features a unique style and dimensions.

The US model is slightly longer and wider, which translates into more interior space for people and cargo.

For the 2016 model year, the Passat will be available with optional LED headlamps that use less energy without sacrificing visibility.

LED tail lights are standard across all trim levels.

The R-Line model features more aggressive body panels with contrasting gloss black trim.

The 3.6-liter V-6 engine appears to persist unchanged for 2016, still outputting 280 horsepower.

The 1.8-liter turbocharged, gasoline four-cylinder gets a 2 mpg bump on the highway.

VW will continue to offer its 2.0-liter TDI engine, though how its proposed emissions fixes will affect performance is unknown.

The 2016 Passat will be built in the automaker's Chattanooga, Tennessee factory.

Dealers will start to see stock later this year.

Pricing starts at $22,440 for the base 1.8T S model with its six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
