Toyota's RAV4 soon to be available as a hybrid (pictures)

The fourth-generation Toyota RAV4 gains a new power train option with the announcement of the 2016 RAV4 hybrid at the 2015 New York International Auto Show.

Along with the new hybrid model, the entire line of RAV4 trim levels gets a visual and content refresh.

The new front end is, for lack of a better term, squintier. The smaller headlamps and new frowny face bring the RAV4's fascia in line with the new Corolla and Camry.

Around back, the rear end also gets a few subtler tweaks.

The profile hasn't changed much, but that's to be expected with a midcycle refresh.

The big news is the addition of Hybrid XLE and Hybrid Limited trim levels.

All Hybrid models are equipped with Toyota's AWD-i, an on-demand system that uses an electric motor at the rear axle to provide all-wheel drive torque.

Hybrid models sit at the top of the RAV4 lineup.

Inside, we see small tweaks to the interior design, including improved materials and a revised cupholder design.

All 2016 models (except LE) feature a new leather steering wheel.

At the base of the center stack are the buttons that toggle the hybrid's EV, Eco and Power drive modes. Here you'll also find the new front USB port.

In the dashboard, the small SUV gains a 7-inch infotainment option.

The upper dashboard and door panels now feature new soft-touch materials.

RAV4 will also offer a new Bird’s Eye View Monitor.

The Bird's Eye system stitches together feeds from four cameras mounted around the RAV4 to give a 360-degree view.

The new headlamps are smaller and shaped to flow into the narrower upper grille opening.

As it shares basic underpinnings with the Lexus NX, we expect that the new RAV4 Hybrid will feature a similar power train to the NX300h.

Expect a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine mated with a pair of electric motors (one up front and one at the rear axle).

Total system horsepower should be somewhere in the 190-200 horsepower range.

Fuel economy should also be in line with the NX 300h's 33 combined mpg.

The new taillights feature LED "ribbon" lights inside of a clear housing.

The engine room for the rest of the RAV4 line remains unchanged for the 2016 model year.

That means it uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque.

All-wheel drive is also available with the conventional power train, but front drive is the standard setup.

The SE trim level for the conventional RAV4 joins the line for 2016, bringing with it a sport-tuned suspension.

A new Toyota Safety System (TSS) package bundles precollision warning, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, a pedestrian warning system and adaptive cruise control.
