2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder: A beautiful arachnid (pictures)

Porsche's new Boxster Spyder is the purest version of the two seat roadster, with many weight saving strategies that some may find don't go far enough.

I love two-seater, RWD convertibles and own a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata for pavement fun and a lifted 2001 Miata for pre-running. I race air-cooled Volkswagens in desert races like the Mint 400 and the Baja 1000. I have won the Rebelle Rally, seven-day navigational challenge, twice and I am the only driver to compete in an EV, the Rivian R1T.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Boxster Spyder are the two streamliners, that extend from the roll bars into the back deck lid.

Pirelli P-Zero tires keep the Boxster Spyder glued to the road, even under aggressive cornering.

The Boxster Spyder weighs 66 pounds less than the next in line GTS, thanks to air conditioning and radio delete, cloth door pulls and a re-engineered manual soft top.

The manual soft top can be raised or lowered in six steps. It fits under the rear deck lid with no reduction in trunk space.

Two fins extend from the top to the rear quarter panel. They give the Boxster Spyder a unique look, but they do make raising or lowering the top more time consuming.
