2015 Chevy SS wraps a big, American V-8 in an Australian shell (pictures)
The big-bodied performance sedan lives on in the 2015 Chevrolet SS, a four-door car with big power and a great noise.
2015 Chevrolet SS
This is it, the 2015 Chevrolet SS.
Australian parentage
The SS is actually a Holden Commodore in disguise, imported from Australia and dressed up to look like a Chevy.
Holden
The Commodore, and now the SS, are large performance sedans with big power under the hood.
Engine under plastic
In this case it's a 6.2-liter V-8 putting out 415 horsepower. Unfortunately it's very shy, so Chevy had to cover it with this ugly plastic shroud.
Lights
HID projector headlights are standard.
Logos
The nose is different than on the Holden Commodore, wearing Chevy's corporate look.
Brakes
Big Brembos sit at all four corners, tucked inside 19-inch wheels.
Interior
Four doors open to a very roomy interior.
Profile
The car looks nice, but it doesn't make much a visual statement. It's very easy to lose it in a parking lot.
Large and in charge
Despite its generous proportions.
Gauges
A multi-function display is cradled between the analogue tach and speedometer. A color HUD is standard.
Push-button
Keyless ignition is also standard.
MyLink
The SS's MyLink system looks and feels dated, with sluggish performance.
Nav
Navigation is particularly poor.
Alcantara
Alcantara and leather are everywhere in the interior, with the former of the two not appearing to wear very well.
Manual
Yes, a genuine six-speed manual transmission. It shifts quite nicely.
Wheel
Controls on the steering wheel manage cruise and radio settings.
Seating
Seats look great, but lack lateral support for sporty driving and are a bit too flat and firm for continued comfort on the highway.
Rear
Rear seats are plush and comfortable, and the entire cabin is very roomy.
Door card
Overall fit and finish in the interior is quite good.
Three pedals
And, a final shot, proof that this is an honest-to-gosh manual car, with a clutch and everything.
