2014 Porsche Cayman S: A bit more powerful, a lot better-looking
It was only a matter of time before Porsche got around to overhauling the Cayman coupe. After all, its platform-mate and sibling, the 2013 Boxster, has just been updated.
Breathe easy
Like the 2013 Boxster, the new Cayman features larger and deeper side intakes. Both of those intakes are now functional -- the previous generation only breathed through one of its two.
Wheelbase and track
The Cayman's wheels have been pushed out to its extreme corners, resulting in a wider stance and a longer wheelbase. Both dimensional increases should help the vehicle feel stabler and more planted.
Smooth spoiler
Also like the Boxster, the Cayman has a motorized rear spoiler that is integrated into the design of the vehicle rather than looking tacked-on.
Rear brace
The Boxster hides its rear cross brace under its folding roof, but the Cayman proudly displays its brace through the rear glass.
Engine amidships
The Cayman S' 3.4-liter engine sends 325 horsepower to the rear axle. The power doesn't have to travel far in the midengined Cayman.
Dual exhuast
The Cayman S is further distinguished by its twin exhaust tips, which are centrally located.
Base-model Cayman
The base-model Cayman uses an single exhaust tip (still located in the middle), but the same wide and low chassis.
Streamlined profile
One of the best changes to the new Cayman is also the subtlest. I love that Porsche has smoothed out the coupe's profile where the roofline meets the beltline.
2.7-liter boxer engine
The 2.7-liter, horizontally opposed base engine generates 275 horsepower -- as with the previous generation, this is exactly 10 horsepower more than the Boxster.
Pricing
The Cayman also continues the tradition of being more expensive than the Boxster, starting at $52,600 (or $3,100 more than its topless sister).
2013 availability
The 2014 Porsche Cayman and Cayman S will roll into North American Porsche dealerships in April of 2013.
