2013 Volkswagen CC (photos)

Volkswagen redesigned its sleek sedan, the CC, for the 2013 model year. Borrowing a little from the Audi A7, the roofline comes down to the trunk lip. A standard Volkswagen grille treatment gets added to the front.

Volkswagen launched its CC four years ago, and is updating the 2013 model with a new look and tech features. Volkswagen calls the CC, which stands for Comfort Coupe, a four-door coupe. It is an oddball in the Volkswagen model lineup, with similar dimensions and passenger capacity to the Passat. But the CC has a much more elegant look and Volkswagen has given it many premium features.

The 2013 model gets a front end that comports with Volkswagen's current design language. Similar to the new Passat and Jetta, the grille is bracketed by the headlights. On the CC, Bi-Xenon headlights are standard for 2013. LED running lights are standard on all but the base trim.

Two different engines are available in the CC, a four-cylinder and a V-6. This four-cylinder is Volkswagen's direct-injection turbocharged 2-liter, which makes 200 horsepower. CCs with this engine get either a six-speed manual transmission or Volkswagen's Direct Shift Gearbox, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

This 3.6-liter V-6, which Volkswagen calls the VR6, is also available. It generates 280 horsepower, and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. With the VR6, Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available.

Volkswagen positions the CC as a more sport-oriented car than the Passat.

Volkswagen calls the CC a coupe because of the open frame doors and the roofline that slopes toward the rear trunk lid. Although it's not a hatchback, a Volkswagen representative referred to the CC as a less expensive Audi A7.

The cabin of the CC shows a marked difference from the Passat, which has a much more premium look. The two-tone seating covers are a particularly nice touch.

Following the innovations introduced in the Jetta and Passat, Volkswagen added four directional thumb buttons on the steering-wheel spokes for controlling the instrument cluster display and the infotainment system.

Volkswagen makes its RN315 navigation navigation system available for the 2-liter CC, and its RN510 system available on the VR6 version. The latter navigation system includes traffic data and a larger LCD. All CCs are available with iPod integration and Bluetooth phone systems. At the top trim, the CC gets a Dynaudio stereo.

Where the previous CC had two bucket seats in the rear, Volkswagen replaced them with a bench, making the car capable of carrying five people.
