2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance weekend (pictures)
One of the most impressive historic car shows in the world also plays host to its share of new, exotic cars. We spent last Sunday at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
McLaren 12C Spider
McLaren Automotive had the recently unveiled Spider version of its 12C Coupe on display.
Infiniti EMERG-E
One of the most eye-catching and popular concepts at Pebble Beach this year was the Infiniti Emerg-E, an electric vehicle with a three-cylinder gas engine to extend its 30-mile electric-only range.
Hennessey Venom GT Spyder
In other top-chopping news, Hennessey made a roadster out of its Venom GT. Luckily they offset the added weight by boosting the engine's output to 1,244 horsepower, thereby maintaining the car's one-horsepower-per-kilogram ratio.
Lamborghini Sesto Elemento
Named after carbon, the sixth element on the periodic table, this is Lamborghini's rolling showcase of its expertise with carbon-fiber reinforced plastics. Total curb weight is a hair over 2,200 pounds.
BMW Zagato Roadster
BMW and Zagato followed up their recent Coupe concept with this Roadster version, which made its international debut at Pebble Beach.
Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe
The Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe is a sort of evolution of the design language of the company's successful CLS four-door.
Bentley EXP 9 F
Making its United States premiere at Pebble Beach, this Bentley SUV concept could represent a third model line to go with the Mulsanne and Continentals.
Swan and Cygnet
Unique cars abound at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, but these two drew more smiles than any others this year. The Swan was commissioned by a Scotsman living in India in the early 20th century, and then sold to a maharaja who had the Cygnet built to keep it company. They now reside in Holland.
1922 Megola Touring
One of the most unusual non-avian-looking vehicles we saw this year was this 1922 Megola Touring, a motorcycle with a five-cylinder, 640cc radial engine driving the front axle directly.
1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S by Saoutchik
This custom-bodied Mercedes, seen here among its fellow class winners, went on to be chosen as Best of Show.
1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S by Saoutchik
Jacques Saoutchik was a French coachbuilder whose work was featured in its own special class at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S won that class, and is seen here on the podium after then being chosen as overall Best of Show.
1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster
The auctions around Monterey in 2012 again saw multiple cars sell for over $10 million each. One was this 1936 Mercedes, known as the Von Kreiger Roadster, nicknamed after the baronness who originally owned it. It's shown here just after being sold by Gooding and Company for $10.7 million, or a total sale price of $11.77 million, including buyer's premium.
