2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan--photos
Currently, Infiniti offers some of the best cabin tech in the automotive world, and the 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan exemplifies a balance of modern convenience and sport driving prowess. Although we recently reviewed the 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe with all-wheel-drive, we took a look at the G37 Sedan to test out Infiniti's new adaptive cruise control system.
As Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti makes cars competitive with European stalwarts BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. The G37 is at the bottom of Infiniti's model line-up, but easily comparable with BMW's 3-series.
Infiniti has evolved a unique style with the G37, which includes an inset hood and soft curves. The front fenders flare out slightly and headlights follow the curve of the fenders.
Infiniti replaced its old 3.5-liter V-6 with a new 3.7-liter V-6 last year, subsequently changing the model name from G35 to G37. In the sedan, this engine makes 328 horsepower while delivering a little over 20 mpg in our testing.
High intensity discharge headlights are standard on the G37, as are LED tail lights.
The G37 can be had in sedan or coupe configurations. The coupe has a steep roof drop-off, compromising rear seat space, while the sedan seats five easily.
The ride quality is reasonable in the G37 Sedan, leaning a little more toward sport than luxury. In cornering, the G37 keeps body roll to a minimum.
At 13.5 cubic feet, the trunk is capacious enough for most needs.
In recent year, Infiniti has offered some of the best cabin tech available, including a control interface that is easy to use. Infiniti has also standardized on an in-dash LCD, even when navigation isn't taken as an option.
Cabin tech controls are well-integrated into the steering wheel, making it easy for the driver to make phone calls and adjust the audio without letting go of the wheel.
Infiniti complements its tasteful analog gauges with a monochrome display for trip information.
Infiniti also upgraded its transmission along with the new engine, using seven gears in the automatic. This transmission has the standard Drive mode, plus Sport and Manual modes.
Column-mounted paddle shifters let you select gears in manual mode. We found downshifts reasonable fast, but upshifts lagged a bit.
The navigation system includes 3D representations of buildings in urban areas. Because maps are stored on a hard drive, response times are quick.
Route guidance graphics are rich, showing a good representation of upcoming turns.
Among its many audio sources, the G37 Sedan offers an iPod port. The interface is very good, letting you choose much by album, artist, or genre.
Infiniti also offers an excellent rearview camera, complete with overlays that show the direction the car will take based on how the wheels are turned.
