UK motorway speed limits should be increased, according to our poll

Eighty nine per cent of CNETeers think that motorway speed limits are too low and that we should abolish the current 70mph upper limit, although the manner in which we should go about doing so divides opinion.

A short time ago, in a galaxy not too dissimilar to the one we currently live in, we asked our Facebook fan army what they thought of the current motorway speed limits. Are they too low? Too high? Do our fancy modern cars make them old hat? As ever, you responded in your droves, and, today, we can present you with the results of our poll thus far.

A whopping 89 per cent of you believe motorway speed limits are too low and that we should abolish the current 70mph upper limit, although the manner in which we should go about doing so divides opinion.

Sixty per cent of respondents to the poll reckon we should increase the 70mph limit to 80mph. One such reader, Jim Mason, commented: "Technology has, yet again, outpaced the law! Perhaps judges should be taught how to drive rather than them telling us?"

Twenty-nine per cent of you, meanwhile, said we should follow Germany's example by introducing unrestricted sections on our motorways. CDK86 said: "Follow the example set by Germany… The UK is out of date in so many ways. Let's not let speed limits carry on as they are!"

Not everybody wants change, however. Six per cent of respondents said we should keep the current 70mph limit, with many believing lower speed limits put less of a demand on our planet's dwindling supply of fossil fuels.

Rob Lightbody, explained: "Going faster uses far more fuel. Seventy is enough, unless the vehicle is using renewable energy."

Finally, 2 per cent of you believe 70mph is too fast -- thanks for taking part, grandma -- while 3 percent of you, smart alecks primarily, believe speed limits are irrelevant because "where we're going, we don't need roads".

The debate is still raging on our Facebook fan page. Stop by, hit the 'like' button, and tell us how you feel about our motorway speed limits.
