Toyota bringing race-ready Tacoma to SEMA Show

It wouldn't be the SEMA Show without a few tire-smoking drag racers. Toyota throws its hat into the ring early, previewing the heavily modified Tacoma X-Runner RTR. The "RTR" stands for Ready to Race. Obviously, Toyota means business with this project pickup truck.

Toyota calls the RTR a "parts bin" build, meaning that nearly all of the components that went into the project are available Toyota products--supposedly, only the traction bars and driveshaft are non-OEM parts.

Starting with the larger Tundra's standard 5.7-liter V8 and automatic transmission, Toyota's gearheads bolted a TRD supercharger kit that sends 504-horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque to the Tundra's stock rear axle. Other upgraded bits include a TRD prototype limited slip differential, a suspension that has been lowered 4.5 inches from stock height, and a custom exhaust system with dual TRD mufflers.

You couldn't call it ready to race without some weight reduction, so Toyota yanked out all non-essential cabin equipment. The RTR has lost its stereo, speakers, air conditioner, power windows, front fog lamps, windshield water bottle, and rear seats all in the pursuit of speed.

The Toyota Tacoma X-Runner RTR will be hanging around Toyota's display at the 2010 SEMA Show.
