TomTom for iPhone version 1.3 gets new features, traffic charge

TomTom's update to its app for iPhone adds traffic data as an in-app purchase.

TomTom's latest version 1.3 update to its navigation app for iPhone went live this week, adding a handful of new features that we were expecting, and a few that we didn't.

We'd heard previously that the 1.3 update would bring integrated Google Local search and TomTom Traffic. However, rather than rolling the traffic service into the update, TomTom gives users access to the service as an in-app subscription. For U.S. users, this means shelling out $19.99 per year to gain access to live flow and incident data for more accurate routing and arrival time estimates.

Other new features rolled into this update include automatic day and night modes for better visibility 'round the clock; OS-level integration for saving locations from the browser and other apps; pinch and zoom maps; and an automatic music fader so you don't miss the prompt for your turn because of an epic guitar solo.

The TomTom app for iPhone version 1.3 is available as a free upgrade for users of previous versions of the app. New users will have to shell out $59. Users can pay the $20 per year for TomTom's traffic service or navigate without it.
