This is what Hyundai's first N performance car will sound like

The future is coming, and it sounds very good, indeed.

Hyundai's performance division is known as N. No, it's not a ripoff of BMW's M division -- N stands for Namyang, which is where the brand's hopped-up cars are developed. We don't know much about what's coming from this division, but we now get to hear what its first offering will sound like.

The first N model will be based off Hyundai's i30 hatchback, known as the Elantra GT in the US. In the video below, we get to hear our first taste of the hardcore N variant, and boy, it's an aural delight. It pops, burbles and barks its way around a test track in this quick little video. It's a good start for Hyundai's performance division -- heck, it sounds better than Porsche's new 718 Cayman.

The i30 N should be out next year, although we imagine there will be some time before it debuts in the US. The redesigned 2017 Elantra is already on sale, but there's no GT model on sale yet -- or even announced, for that matter.
