Lexus' spider-themed Kinetic Seat concept is sort of terrifying
It looks like something a supervillain would use.
Not every auto show debut is a car. Some automakers also prefer to highlight certain technologies. Lexus is doing that for this year's Paris Motor Show, unveiling its Kinetic Seat concept ahead of the show's press days. It's pretty creepy, but rest assured, it's built that way to help your frail human body.
The Kinetic Seat is all about making the occupant more comfortable, even if it doesn't look remotely comfy. The back of the seat has a spider-web pattern that emanates from the center of the backrest, meant to diffuse the body's weight to add comfort. The whole thing is made of synthetic spider silk, rather than plastic.
A higher back helps stabilize the head and neck. The seat cushion and backrest are meant to move with external forces, again helping to stabilize the body during tight cornering maneuvers. Comfort doesn't necessarily have to look like a big, plush pillow, after all.
Of course, this is just a concept, because I'd be hard pressed to think of any car where this seat would look at home. But it makes an important point -- our current seats are far from perfect. Thankfully, if you don't like looking at creepy seats, Lexus will also have its new UX Concept on display at Paris, with media days beginning on September 29.
