SHANGHAI--Subaru is thinking small for its latest crossover.

The XV Concept, which was unveiled at the Shanghai auto show, would slot below the Outback and Forester. It might come to the United States if Subaru concludes it's big enough for U.S. tastes.

But Subaru is pitching the XV at China, trying to parlay the success of the Forester and Outback into a new niche. The Forester and Outback are viewed as SUVs in China.

The XV is about the size of the Impreza, Subaru's smallest offering.

A spokesman says the vehicle will compete with the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. He offered no details on when production might start.
