Gone are the days when "getting coffee" was the main responsibility of the corporate intern. Porsche recently let one intern design the race insignia emblazoned on a 911 GT3 race car.

Anna Frey, a recent industrial design graduate from Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, was responsible for designing the paint job for Porsche Cars North America's (PCNA) entry in the 2011 Porsche Carrera World Cup. The 70.2-mile race was held over the weekend on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, and PCNA's 911 GT3 was piloted by American Le Mans Series GTC Champion Melanie Snow.

PCNA also let a team of six employees act as a pit crew of sorts, documenting the event as part of social media outreach. Using an intern to design the livery wasn't a cheap way to save on labor or garner publicity--Frey's design was selected as part of a competition, and her livery concept was chosen over several designs submitted by professionals.

"I am very excited my design was selected," Frey said in a news statement. "I have loved cars since I started attending car shows with my father when I was growing up. The opportunity to intern at Porsche has been very rewarding and exciting. And the thought of my design appearing on a Porsche race car in front of thousands of people--and 100 other Porsche race cars--is quite amazing!"

Unfortunately, her design's appearance was short-lived. Snow crashed the PCNA's 911 GT3 on the first lap going into turn one. The Porsche Carrera World Cup was won by René Gast of VELTINS Lechner Racing squad.
