No compromises with the Audi S4

Although most of the body is the same as the A4, the S4 gets bigger front vents, with a fascia designed to better funnel air. The wide bumper band across the grille de-emphasizes the size of the grille.

We used to think that if we wanted speed, we had to sacrifice fuel economy. But we still held up as an ideal a fast car that wouldn't drain its tank after 200 miles. Audi comes the closest we've seen to date with the new S4.

Using a supercharged 3-liter V-6, the S4 easily averages more than 20 mpg, while at the same time hitting 60 mph in less than five seconds. OK, it's not as fast as a BMW M3, but we found its performance thrilling and excellent for throwing around winding country roads, its Quattro all-wheel-drive digging into the corners.

It's also an extraordinarily comfortable car, with very refined cabin tech. The suspension strikes a perfect balance between sports car firm and luxury soft. A Bang & Olufsen audio system serves up well-balanced music, and the navigation system renders buildings and topographical features in detailed 3D.
