Jaguar C-X16 'baby Jag' concept ready to scream

Jaguar's teased us with a sketch of its new C-X16 -- a baby supercar, destined to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Jaguar looks set to steal the forthcoming Frankfurt Motor show with a new 'baby' Jag, dubbed the C-X16 -- just as it did last year at the Paris Motor Show with its bonkers C-X75 hypercar.

The British-made, Indian-powered company's keeping it in its nursery until the show kicks off, so all we've seen of the ickle supercar thus far is this sketch, the concept's name and some rumblings from the Internet that the C-X16 will attempt to tangle with the likes of the Porsche Cayman, Audi TT RS and other cars aimed at hairdressers with attitude.

The C-X16 -- and any actual cars it fathers later down the line -- will be based on the same platform as the Jaguar XK. It should be significantly lighter than the XK, however, as Jaguar will reportedly reduce the length of the XK chassis by 30cm, ditch the rear seats and adopt a host of lightweight alloy components, according to Pistonheads.

Jaguar has yet to release any technical details, but we'd say there's every chance the C-X16 will be driven by smaller petrol engines than we saw in the current XK range. A choice of V6 lumps would make sense, some of which might be turbo or supercharged to high heaven. Here's hoping anyway.

We'll have to wait until mid-September before Jaguar divulges the C-X75's secrets, but while you wait, here's what Jaguar design legend Ian Callum had to say on the matter: "Great Jaguars have always been beautiful, innovative and have looked firmly to the future. The finished C-X16 concept has the potential to do these things while retaining the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate."

Roll on September.
