From August 2010, BMW buyers can specify their new vehicles with in-car internet access.
Available as an AU$200 option (AU$154 for cars under the luxury car tax threshold of AU$57,466) on BMWs equipped with the company's iDrive entertainment and navigation system. Internet connectivity is supplied by an internet-capable phone, rather than an on-board SIM card.
Driver and passengers will be able to surf the web on the car's in-dash LCD screen using the iDrive controller. Users can also directly dial phone numbers from websites, as well as navigate to addresses.
For safety reasons, web access is only permitted when the car is stationary.
The internet connectivity option is available cross the BMW range on any model fitted with the Professional Navigation System. Unfortunately BMW Australia has confirmed that it isn't possible to upgrade a current iDrive-equipped car for internet access.
