Intel may partner with BMW to produce autonomous cars

Self-driving cars may be a step closer to hitting the streets if a potential partnership with BMW and Intel comes to pass.

Tech giant Intel is set to team up with German automotive goliath BMW in order to develop self-driving cars, Bloomberg reports.

The collaboration, which will also include collision avoidance software developer Mobileye, may be announced as soon as Friday, according to anonymous sources quoted by Bloomberg.

Although car manufacturers such as Tesla use advanced sensors to provide assistance to the driver, fully autonomous vehicles are still a long way off being widely used on public roads. The coming together of three such powerful names could help accelerate that process.

Intel declined to comment on the story. BMW has yet to respond to a request for comment.
