Looking for a little adventure without getting arrested, getting lost, or upsetting the locals? Try the Cannonball Run Rat Race.
Based on the 1981 movie Cannonball Run, drivers and their co-pilots search for six sequential clues that will lead the winner to a locker full of cash.
According to Cannonball World Event's managing director, Tim Porter, the race is like: "'The Cannonball Run' meets 'Raiders of the Lost Ark."' A 21st century spin might be "Cannonball Run" meets "The Amazing Race." In the "Cannonball Run" movie, Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, and the late Farrah Fawcett compete in a crazy, very illegal, cross-country race.
The U.S. dates for the Cannonball Run Rat Race are set for Sept. 3, 2011 in New York City's Central Park and will end about 3,000 miles away in Southern California on Sept. 9 or 10, 2011.
Cannonball World Events this week announced the date for next year's Cannonball Run Rat Race, which will begin in Brisbane, Australia on Feb. 19, 2012.
In this event, contestants will travel 3,000 kilometers (a little more than 1,864 miles) to their destination.
According to Porter's Facebook page, he is in Australia promoting the Down Under event. "Melbourne to Sydney 892 klms 7.5 hours no tickets who said driving in Australia is slow," Porter posted on May 3, 2011.
The entry fee is $8,995; entrants are limited to 60 cars for each event.
Fans of the event can follow along with the official Cannonball Run app for iPhone, iPod, or iPad available on iTunes for $3.99.
