Audi A5 sighted in San Francisco

CNET Car Tech editors see an Audi A5 cruising around San Francisco, and get some pictures.

While testing out an Infiniti G37 on the streets of San Francisco, we sidled up next to an Audi A5, a car that won't be available in the U.S. until next spring. We got our camera phone out and snapped a few pictures, difficult to do in the heavy traffic. There seemed to be a little bit of fate involved, as we were driving the G37, the newest coupe from Infiniti, and the A5 will be the newest coupe from Audi. Both cars were red and have similar designs, although the G37 has more distinct front fenders.

So what was a car that's not being released for six months doing cruising around San Francisco? According to the ugly white lettering stuck to its side, the car runs on E85, a blend of 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent ethanol. We assume it is some type of demonstration or test vehicle. We were also surprised to see that it's powered by Audi's 2-liter turbocharged engine, which marks it as built for the European market. The European Union license plate was another clue. When it comes to the U.S. next year, it will come with a 3.2-liter V-6.
