The Saturn Sky, which debuted for the 2007 model year, shares the same Kappa platform as the Pontiac Solstice. Standard features include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry and the usual power accoutrements. The Sky separates itself from its Pontiac sibling, the Solstice, by providing an added layer to the cloth convertible top for more noise attenuation and a revised suspension.
The Sky offers several options and packages to choose from, including leather seat inserts, a Monsoon sound system upgrade, which is MP3 capable, and a premium trim package that includes leather seat inserts, a leather wrapped shift knob, metallic finish sill plates, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and stainless steel pedal covers.
In base form, GM's 2.4L Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine uses variable valve timing to produce 173 hp. The Red Line trim includes a 260-hp 2.0L turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine. Both engines can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The Sky Red Line, aimed at performance enthusiasts, also includes a limited-slip 3.73 rear axle, performance-oriented suspension tuning, more aggressive performance tires, polished wheels, a high-flow stainless exhaust system with dual outlets and unique Red Line-specific exterior and interior trim pieces. New this year is a Ruby Red Limited Edition model, as well as a Hydro Blue Special Edition, each of which can be outfitted on either the base or Red Line Sky. They add leather upholstery and unique badging, as well as Bluetooth and steering wheel audio controls.
Driver and passenger airbags are standard, as are traction control and electronic stability control. All in all, the Sky offers great looks, plenty of comfort and convenience features, and just enough space for a weekend getaway for two. Top it all off with an unbeatable fun-per-dollar quotient, and Saturn's sleek convertible is a great choice.
The 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line is the ideal car for stalking in the urban jungle and attacking freeway on-ramps. Great performance and a head-turning body style outweigh its cramped cabin and low-tech interior.
