Going on sale starting in the 2014 model year, the CLA-Class has (or is about to) reach the halfway point in the average vehicle life cycle. Thus, in order to keep its product fresh and therefore competitive, it's throwing a few mild updates at its most affordable US sedan.
Keen eyes will notice new bumpers both front and rear -- on the whole, though, the design language is largely the same as before. Integrated tailpipes and small front-end adjustments help lower the car's drag coefficient, which should improve fuel economy a tad. There are also new wheel designs and paint colors on offer. Full LED headlights are available on the CLA 250 and standard on the CLA45.
The updates are a bit more apparent inside. There's a new 8-inch display for all CLA models, which is a bit slimmer than the previous screen. A backup camera is also now standard, as is Mercedes-Benz's active brake assist. Optional tech includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (as part of the Smartphone Integration Package), adaptive suspension and a wide variety of active and passive safety systems.
Both cars remain powered by 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 puts out 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with the owner's choice of standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. The hot-to-trot Mercedes-AMG CLA45 ups those figures to 375 and 350, respectively. Both cars utilize seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions.
There's no word yet on pricing, but both models will arrive in US in the third quarter of 2016. We'll get up close and personal with the 2017 CLA at the New York International Auto Show starting on March 23.
