LAS VEGAS -- Whirlpool was one of the first brands to join the initiative. So, it's not super surprising that the team is rolling out an entirely new washer and dryer pair, dubbed the Smart Top Load Washer and Dryer, with smart home functionality.

According to Whirlpool, you could program your Smart Top Load Dryer to automatically switch to EcoBoost mode -- an option that increases the drying time, saving energy and possibly reducing your monthly bill -- if your Nest Learning Thermostat is set to Away mode.

Through the Whirlpool app, you'll be able to access troubleshooting tutorials and custom downloadable cleaning cycles that take extra care with baby clothes, comforters and other specialty items.

The updated touchscreen panel condenses your cleaning choices into "what to wash" and "how to wash" categories -- something that probably would have helped me out when I was first delved into the whole color-whites-delicate-hot-cold-warm debate. It also features a quiet mode and built-in tech that supposedly senses the size of your washing load and adjusts the amount of water accordingly.

Whirlpool's Smart Top Load Washer and Dyer is expected to hit retail in the Spring; pricing information is not available just yet. Find out what else is happening at CES 2015.
