Toshiba Libretto U100

The diminutive Toshiba Libretto series offers laptop-level performance in a pint-size package. With a 1.2GHz ultra-low-voltage Pentium M processor, 512MB of 333MHz RAM, and a 60GB hard drive, the little Libretto has the processing power to keep up with larger and heavier computers. It also has many of the connections you'd find on an ultraportable laptop--including VGA, FireWire, modem, Ethernet, and two USB 2.0 ports, as well as a headphone jack and one Type II PC Card slot--and a fingerprint reader for security. But it's about the size of a VHS tape and weighs 2.2 pounds, so you can tuck it easily into a briefcase or a large coat pocket. Such portability is not without sacrifices, though: the Libretto's 7.2-inch, 1,280x768 native resolution screen can be difficult to read, and the reduced keyboard proves difficult for long stints of typing.

While all Libretto models offer the same components, buyers can opt for the U100-S213 (backed by a standard one-year warranty), the U100 (covered by a three-year warranty), or the U105, which includes a multiformat DVD burner in an external dock. Find out more in our full review.
