Sony VAIO NW160J review: Sony VAIO NW160J

Our review unit was a preproduction model, and differs slightly from the final shipping version. While we had a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400, the final version has a slightly faster 2.1GHz T6500. The difference in real-world terms would be minor. The T6400 and T6500 processors are decent for mainstream needs, and while the Vaio NW160J performed slightly under its competitors in our benchmark tests, with a discrete 512MB graphics card, the NW160J can be used reasonably well for gaming. Our Unreal Tournament 3 test generated 40 frames per second when running at a resolution of 1,280x720 pixels, which is more than sufficient. You could certainly play many mainstream games on this machine with minimal difficulty.

However, the Dell Studio 1440-022B, the HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx, and the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960 models we compared the Vaio against are also several hundred dollars cheaper on average. Are the extra graphics memory and Blu-ray drive worth it? Since the Blu-ray worked so well and the laptop was very comfortable to use, we'd say yes, but only if you're very interested in playing Blu-ray movies on your laptop.

The included battery delivered 3 hours and 15 minutes in our video playback test. Other laptops in our comparison test performed better, but at over 180 minutes, that's not a bad performance for the Vaio, either. Home usage under normal use Web browsing and work conditions should produce better results.

Sony includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system. Vaio support is accessible through a 24-7 phone line (but it's not a free call) and a well-laid-out Web site, with an online knowledge base and driver downloads.
