Sony DCR-HC - First Take

Sony DCR-HC - First Take

Lori Grunin Senior Editor / Advice
I've been reviewing hardware and software, devising testing methodology and handed out buying advice for what seems like forever; I'm currently absorbed by computers and gaming hardware, but previously spent many years concentrating on cameras. I've also volunteered with a cat rescue for over 15 years doing adoptions, designing marketing materials, managing volunteers and, of course, photographing cats.

Quick Take: The baby of Sony's consumer MiniDV line, the Handycam DCR-H21 uses the same lens and sensor as its slightly higher-end sibling, the DCR-HC32, so you can expect comparable video quality in all but darkness. Absent features available on the more upscale product include support for a Handycam station, the ability to shoot still photos and save them to a Memory Stick, and Super Night Shot Plus low-light mode.
