In brief

Sony continues its lineage of stylish compact cameras with this new addition, the WX30. It boasts a couple of new features as well as tried and tested Sony standards, including Sweep Panorama. While the camera has a 5x optical zoom, it also comes with the oddly titled "By Pixel Super Resolution", which augments the optical zoom to 10x, purportedly without a loss of quality. There are no specifics on how the technology works, but we're placing a bet on it being similar to Panasonic's intelligent zoom (which is a fancy way of saying enhanced digital zoom).

At the back of the camera is a 3-inch touchscreen, and the image sensor is a 16.2-megapixel Exmor R unit behind the lens. The new Super Resolution technology also lets the camera take 12-megapixel still images during HD video recording.

The WX30 also comes with a range of picture effects, including HDR, miniature and toy camera thrown in for good measure. There's no pricing for Australia yet, but we should expect this to hit shelves by the end of September.
