LAS VEGAS -- You now risk mistaking an external hard drive for an internal one.

That's because today Seagate announced the Seven, a new portable drive that's just 7mm thick, which is the same thickness as many internal drives. In fact, most standard laptop hard drives are actually thicker at 9.5mm. On top of the the new Seven uses a all-steel housing, similar to that of a regular hard drive. For this reason, as a glance, it looks just like an internal drive itself.

To achieve this thickness, the Seven houses in side an ultra-thin internal drive that's just 5mm thick, and for now it's the slimmest portable drive on the market.

The Seven supports USB 3.0 and comes with just one Micro USB 3.0 port for both power and data connections. The drive is also compatible with USB 2.0 and works with both Windows and Mac computers.

Despite the extreme compact size, the Seven is very rugged and feel solid. Seagate says the drive's case is strong enough to withstands shocks, accidental drops and even being run over by a small car.

The new Seagate Seven portable is slated to be available later this month in just one capacity of 500GB that carries the suggested price of $99.99 in the U.S. (Pricing and availability in U.K. and Australia will be announced later.) The drive includes a three-year warranty. For its performance, check back soon for the full review.
