Nikon Coolpix S02 is one small camera

This follow-up to the S01 remains supersmall and lightweight, but gets a new sensor and larger touch screen.

There's not a lot of love for basic ultracompact point-and-shoots these days. But, for those of you who still have room in your heart (and pocket) for a small camera (and I mean small), Nikon has one it would like to sell you.

The tiny Coolpix S02 measures just 3.1 inches wide by 2.1 inches high by 0.7 inch thick and weighs only 3.6 ounces. Within that body is a 3x f3.3-5.9 30-90mm lens, a 2.7-inch 230K-dot-resolution touch screen, and a 13-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Memory and battery are built in, too, so it won't get any heavier. The battery -- charged via USB -- is good for up to 210 shots, which won't come close to filling up the 7.3GB of internal flash memory.

The CMOS sensor gives the camera the capability to record video at resolutions up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. It also allowed Nikon to include multishot modes for HDR backlight correction and hand-held night scenes.

The Nikon Coolpix S02 will be available in September for $179.95, which, as it was with the S01, is about $80 more than it should be. But, hey, at least you'll be able to pick one up in silver, white, pink, or blue.
