If, like me, you frequented arcades during the '90s, then you probably recognize this title from its glory days as an upright Neo Geo cabinet. What's interesting is that Metal Slug 2 is actually the third in the Metal Slug franchise to make its way to Android, after both Metal Slugs 1 and 3.

The Good

Metal Slug 2 is just as addicting as was its arcade predecessor. Controls are customizable, Autofire option is convenient, and Multiplayer works well.

The Bad

Graphics look like they're straight from the '90s. Game is extremely demanding on device RAM. $3.99 price tag is steep.

The Bottom Line

Whether you're a fan of the arcade original or you're new to the franchise, Metal Slug 2 is an addicting side-scrolling shooter that's worth its relatively high price.

When you first launch the game, you can choose between Arcade Mode and Mission Mode. I prefer the latter, as it lets you pick up on the stage where you leave off, in case you need to take a break and shut down for a while. Meanwhile, Arcade Mode simply gives you 20 credits to get as far as you can. If you need to shut down or if the app unexpectedly quits, all is lost, and you'll have start at the very beginning.

Aside from the new title art and updated menu screens, Metal Slug 2 on Android has all of the same graphics as its arcade predecessor. Depending on how you look at it, this can be either a good or a bad thing. On one hand, the retro graphics help to evoke the nostalgia that makes playing old-school titles like this fun in the first place. But on the other hand, they are certainly underwhelming; they'll probably leave you wondering what a Metal Slug produced in 2013 might look like. In any case, the imperfect visuals of Metal Slug 2 are much less important than its actual gameplay.

While the game's controls have obviously been updated for today's touch-screen mobile interfaces, Metal Slug 2's gameplay on Android is just as addictive as it was in the arcade. There's a virtual control pad on the left side of the screen and three buttons -- Bomb, Shoot, and Jump -- on the right. For the most part, the scheme works perfectly, but if you find otherwise, you can always customize the key configuration however you like.

As you make your way through levels, you'll notice that jumping and shooting simultaneously, shooting diagonally, and shooting downward are all important skills to master. Since the game features onslaughts of enemies coming almost nonstop, this ability to shoot in all directions is an absolute necessity. Also, I suggest flipping on the auto-fire option, which lets you hold down the Fire button to shoot continuously.

As is the case with other shoot-'em-ups, finding new weapons in Metal Slug is one of the most fun parts of the game. First, you start with a relatively weak pistol that can only take out enemies one by one, with one bullet at a time. As you make your way through levels, though, you'll encounter prisoners who will give you upgrades when you free them. My favorite weapon upgrade is the shotgun, which has a short range but can take out large groups of enemies all at once. There are also powerful machine guns, flamethrowers, and other weapons. In addition to guns, you'll come across vehicles that you can use to get through tough spots. For instance, in the first level, you can jump on a camel outfitted with lasers, which happens to be a perfect "vehicle" for attacking the giant airship on the following screen. There are also tanks, robotic suits, and vehicles.

One of the coolest things about Metal Slug 2 is the Multiplayer option. Using Bluetooth, you can connect with a friend to play cooperatively and simultaneously. Just like in the arcade version, you'll have to back each other up and share upgrades in order to succeed.

Its worth noting that Metal Slug 2 can be extremely taxing on your device's RAM, especially during more advanced levels with lots of onscreen action. On one of my devices, I experienced several forced shutdowns due to the overload. That said, another of my devices was able to handle the RAM demand just fine, so the game's performance will depend on your device's specs.
