Icontrol's next-gen Piper security camera has more to love

Icontrol Networks' Piper NV bursts onto the security camera scene with a better resolution than the original as well as night vision capabilities.

LAS VEGAS -- Icontrol Networks' original $199 Piper was a bit of a departure from standard security cameras.

Where many models only capture what's happening at your home or business, Icontrol designed a product that not only had a 180-degree glass fish-eye lens, motion-sensing functionality and two-way talk, but also a 1080p resolution, a built-in siren, a series of environmental sensors, a bunch of alert options, free Cloud storage and a Z-Wave hub.

The $269 Piper NV, which stands for both "new version" and "night vision," retains the features found on the original; it even looks like the team's first iteration. Decked out in a glossy black (or white) finish, it should fit in similarly well in most surroundings. And it will make use of the same Piper Android and iOS app so you can see what's going on at home when you're away.

But the most interesting updates are a bit tougher to spot; Piper NV tacks on a 3.4-megapixel camera sensor for improved optics and night vision, a feature that was missing from the first-gen Piper. Icontrol will continue to sell the $199 Piper on GetPiper.com, and the $269 NV will make its debut there later this month.
