Epson Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One Printer

Epson continues shrinking its all-in-one imaging devices with the new Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One All-in-One Printer. Bearing the same appellation as the NX430 Small-in-One, the multifunction printer focuses on taking printing outside of the home with Epson's host of cloud-based features.

First, the Epson iPrint application for iOS and Android devices enables you to print Web pages, photos, documents, and anything else on a smartphone directly from the device, though I'm hoping that Epson has mitigated the autocropping issues that limited the NX430's usability.

The XP-400 also uses the company's Connect Email Print app, with which you can send a print job remotely using a unique e-mail address assigned to every printer. This means you can attach anything to an e-mail and send it straight to the printer and the job will be waiting for you in the output tray when you arrive home. The feature is similar to HP ePrint, and I can imagine it coming in handy for remote workers needing to share information with the home office, or for families who want an easy way to share photos across the world.

Compatibility with Google Cloud Print and Apple AirPrint paired with a built-in Wi-Fi print server gives users multiple ways to connect the device to a home computer or mobile device, beyond the USB cord typically used to make a pairing.

The XP-400's specs are the same as the NX430's, according to Epson, and include a 2.5-inch color LCD, a memory slot on the bottom left of the unit for importing photos directly from a digital camera, and a four-ink cartridge bay that use Epson's DuraBrite Ultra pigment inks.

The Epson Expression Home XP-400 will cost $99 when it hits shelves in June.
