If you can't wait for Comcast's next-gen Advanced Gateway, Arris has something that you can get now, the SurfBoard SVG2482AC Voice Gateway, a combo box that includes a fast cable modem and an advanced Wi-Fi router in a single box.
In many ways this is a major upgrade to the SBG6782-AC Surfboard eXtreme that came out a few years ago. The new gateway now supports voice and gigabit broadband speed, and as one of the first gateways on the market, features Reference Design Kit-B (RDK-B) technology.
RDK-B is an integrated open-source software stack that provides a common framework for customers' equipment such as set-top boxes, modems/routers/gateways and other devices to communicate with service providers. The technology enables service providers to standardize certain elements of these devices, letting them quickly launch their own new services or customize applications.
For now, thanks to RDK-B, Comcast can actively update the SVG2482AC Gateway's firmware -- a process normally done by the hardware vendor -- to improve its performance or add more services. RDK-B can also be used to deliver more, such as a better support for IoT devices.
The SVG2482AC's full feature list:
- DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem capable of download speeds up to 1 Gbps
- 24 download and eight upload channels
- Four Gigabit Ethernet ports
- Two telephony (VOIP) ports
- 3x3 802.11ac Wi-Fi speeds up to 1,750 Mbps
- Optimized for use with Xfinity Internet and Voice Service
- RDK-B technology to support next-gen products and services
- Optional battery backup (sold separately)
As a Wi-Fi router, the Gateway features 3x3 802.11ac, meaning it has a top speed of 1,300Mbps on the 5GHz band and up to 450Mbps on the 2.4GHz. It also has the usual four Gigabit LAN ports for wired devices.
In addition, getting the new SVG2482AC gateway means that customers won't need to pay Comcast the $10 equipment rental fee anymore. The SurfBoard SVG2482AC Voice Gateway is available now and costs $240.
