Wikitude Drive augmented-reality GPS app for Android (photos)

Wikitude Drive is the first augmented-reality navigation app for Android phones. We take an early beta version for a test drive.

Antuan Goodwin gained his automotive knowledge the old fashioned way, by turning wrenches in a driveway and picking up speeding tickets. From drivetrain tech and electrification to car audio installs and cabin tech, if it's on wheels, Antuan is knowledgeable.

Destination screen

Boot up the Wikitude Drive beta and, after a quick splash screen, you'll be met with this address entry form. There's no search built into Drive, so you'd better know where you're going before you get here.

Fortunately, there are options for fastest or shortest route, avoiding highways and toll roads, and walking or driving directions.

Server side routing

Once you've have your address input, the app contacts Wikitude's servers to download the route maps and calculate the turn-by-turn directions. During this process, Drive may suggest more-accurate addresses for the destination.

Summary page

Once calculations are complete, a summary page is displayed and users are given the option to view a route overview or begin navigation.

Route details

The route details screen gives users an overview of the turns they will be making on the trip.

AR view

The augmented-reality (AR) view is Wikitude Drive's main draw and requires the handset be mounted with its camera unobstructed. As you navigate to your destination, Drive will overlay an indicator line and arrows on top of live video of the road ahead.

Map view

If the AR view gets confusing or you just want a bird's-eye view of where you're going, simply tap the screen to toggle the standard map view. It's a bit spartan, but it'll get you where you're going.
