"Hidden Figures"
This film tells the true story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) -- brilliant African-American women working at NASA, whose expertise helped launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

"La La Land"

"Lion"
This story is about a five-year-old Indian boy who, after a wrong train takes him thousands of miles away from his family, he ends up being adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult, uses Google Earth to find his lost family.

"Fences"
Adapted from August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Fences" tells the tale of former Negro-league baseball player Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) as he fights to provide for his family in 1950s Pittsburgh.

"Doctor Strange"
After a tragic car accident,
a talented but egotistical neurosurgeon played by Benedict Cumberbatch goes on an international quest to find a cure for his physical injuries only to learn about the power of mysticism and alternate dimensions.

"Moana"
An epic adventure about spirited teen Moana (Auli'i Cravalho), who sets sail on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and complete her ancestors' unfinished quest with help from the mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

"The Red Turtle"
This is the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island where he encounters a giant red turtle. The film has no dialog, concentrating instead on stunning visuals.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"
A group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction, in the first Star Wars stand-alone film.

"My Life as a Zucchini"
After a family tragedy, 9-year-old Zucchini is befriended by a police officer named Raymond, who accompanies him to his new foster home. Zucchini struggles to belong, but with the help of Raymond and his newfound friends, he learns to love again.

"Moonlight"
Follow the troubled life of a black boy as he struggles to find his place growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

"Deepwater Horizon"
Based on a real crisis, "Deepwater Horizon" focuses on the bravery of those who worked on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and what they did to survive one of the biggest man-made disasters in history.
Wylie Stateman and Renée Tondelli are nominated for best sound design. Craig Hammack, Jason Snell, Jason Billington and Burt Dalton are nominated for best visual effects.
"Star Trek Beyond"
In "Star Trek Beyond," Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is stranded with his crew at a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space when the USS Enterprise is destroyed by aliens. Our heroes meet a new ruthless enemy and join forces with a rebellious alien warrior who becomes their ally.
Joel Harlow and Richard Alonzo are nominated for best makeup and hairstyling.
"The Jungle Book"
This new live-action remake of "The Jungle Book" tells the tale of orphan boy Mowgli (Neel Sethi), who's raised in the jungle by a wolf pack and a bear voiced by Bill Murray and a black panther voiced by Ben Kingsley. He learns that the tiger Shere Khan, voiced by Idris Elba, has vowed to eliminate what he sees as a threat -- all humans.
Robert Legato, Adam Valdez, Andrew R. Jones and Dan Lemmon are nominated for best visual effects.
"Hail, Caesar!"
When Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) gets kidnapped while in costume for the epic period piece "Hail Caesar!" it's the end of the line for the movie star if the studio doesn't pay $100,000. This comedy set in Hollywood's Golden Age has an all-star cast that also includes Josh Brolin, Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum.
Jess Gonchor and Nancy Haigh are nominated for best production design.
"Florence Foster Jenkins"
Based on a true story, Meryl Streep plays a New York socialite who dreams of becoming a great singer, even though she has an awful singing voice.
"Florence Foster Jenkins" earned a best actress nomination for Meryl Streep. Consolata Boyle is up for best costume design.
"Hell or High Water"
When desperate father Chris Pine learns the bank will foreclose on his family's land, he and his ex-con brother (Ben Foster) decide to rob the bank's branches. Their new criminal enterprise attracts the attention of an aging Texas Ranger played by Jeff Bridges.
"Hell or High Water" has netted a best picture nomination and a best supporting actor nomination for Jeff Bridges.
"Kubo and the Two Strings"
In "Kubo and the Two Strings," young Kubo (Art Parkinson) accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past and must team up with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to unlock a secret legacy. Kubo must battle the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes), other gods and monsters with a magical instrument to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai warrior father and save his family.
Travis Knight and Arianne Sutner are nominated for best animated feature film. Steve Emerson, Oliver Jones, Brian McLean and Brad Schiff are nominated for best visual effects.
"Suicide Squad"
In "Suicide Squad," the world's most dangerous imprisoned supervillains -- who include the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Deadshot (Will Smith) -- are recruited for a deadly mission to defeat an insuperable enemy. Will they choose to work together until the bitter end fight to keep themselves alive?
Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson are nominated for best makeup and hairstyling.
"Sully"
Tom Hanks is Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, who's heralded as a hero for landing his disabled plane on the Hudson River and saving the lives of all 155 passengers on board. But a subsequent investigation threatens to ruin both his reputation and his career.
Alan Robert Murray and Bub Asman are nominated for best sound design.
"Zootopia"
"Zootopia" is a thriving metropolis run by animals. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she's determined to prove herself by taking on a mysterious case. But she has to work with fast-talking con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman).
Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Clark Spencer are nominated for best animated feature film.
"Jim: The James Foley Story"
The documentary "Jim: The James Foley Story" tells the story of American photojournalist James "Jim" Foley, who was kidnapped in Syria, two years before the infamous video of his public execution. The film includes interviews with his family, friends and fellow journalists.
The film features the song "The Empty Chair" with music and lyrics by J. Ralph and Sting. It's up for best original song.
"13th"
Produced by Netflix, "13th" is one of the only films shortlisted that was specifically made for a streaming service. Ava DuVernay's powerful documentary examines race and the US prison system, arguing that slavery continues despite being outlawed by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
