Sony BDV-E770W

The good: A 5.1 home theater system with built-in Blu-ray player; excellent sound quality for a home-theater-in-a-box system; Netflix, Amazon VOD, YouTube, Pandora and Slacker media streaming; DLNA streaming of PC-based media; wireless rear speakers; Wi-Fi with included USB dongle; can connect iPod through USB port; 3D compatible; relatively speedy Blu-ray load times.

The bad: No HDMI inputs; required USB dongle for Wi-Fi is a hassle compared with other units; only three external devices can be connected at once.

The bottom line: The Sony BDV-E770W is one of the best Blu-ray home theater systems we've tested, with excellent sound quality, tons of streaming media options, 3D compatibility and wireless rear speakers. The lack of HDMI inputs is the only big omission.

The good: Above average audio; long-lasting 12-cell battery; Intel Core i3 CPU turns in competitive performance; Intel Wireless Display; solid construction; great keyboard.

The bad: Other systems in this price range offer extra features such as Blu-ray; has flimsy mouse buttons.

The bottom line: The Toshiba Satellite A665-S6050 is a smart choice for home use thanks to its outstanding audio output, Intel Wireless Display, and roomy 16-inch display.

2011 BMW 535i

The good: The 535i has a high level of available infotainment technology and driver aid features, including a Park Assist feature that automates parallel parking. Performance is good and efficiency is up despite this being a larger, more spacious sedan than years prior.

The bad: Suspension feels a bit floaty and body roll is evident despite active suspension tech. Nearly every feature we like in the 5 Series is an additional cost option, which adds considerably to the bottom line.

The bottom line: The 2011 BMW 535i is easily one of the best sport sedans in its class for handling, fit and finish, and prestige, but it doesn't represent the highest value on the market.

LG dLite - bubblegum pink (T-Mobile)

The good: The LG dLite is a stylish and fashionable phone for the ultrafeminine. It has a unique hidden LED matrix display, an edge-lit LED surface, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player, 3G support, and fantastic call quality.

The bad: The LG dLite is almost a half-inch too long. Its keypad feels a little too smooth and flush to the surface, and the keys on the side are very skinny. It does not have a 3.5mm headset jack, and taking photos with it can feel a little awkward.

The bottom line: With its decent midrange feature set and eye-catching design, the LG dLite is a wonderfully girly phone that would appeal to the young, or just the young at heart.

Asus U33Jc-A1 (bamboo)

The good: Beautiful bamboo design; includes USB 3.0; Intel Wireless Display; switchable discrete graphics.

The bad: No optical drive; Intel Wireless Display and Nvidia GPU can't be used at the same time.

The bottom line: A welcome change of pace from the usual glossy plastic and brushed-metal laptop styles, the bamboo-clad Asus U33Jc-A1 looks great and also packs in some very useful technology.

2011 Ford Fiesta

Editors' rating: 3.5 out of 5

The good: Sync remains one of Ford's best cabin technologies, giving the 2011 Fiesta MP3 player and Bluetooth phone compatibility, and the audio quality from the stereo stands out. The dual-clutch transmission is a neat bit of performance tech. The exterior design of this new Fiesta gives it a fun and unique style.

The bad: Sync TDI is not a great substitute for an onboard navigation system. The transmission could not always keep up with driving situations.

The bottom line: A sporty-looking car, the 2011 Ford Fiesta's small size makes it good for urban areas, and it boasts excellent compatibility with personal electronics.

The good: Excellent port assortment; backlit keyboard; full Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010, Webroot antivirus software included.

The bad: Value of included software is questionable; no discrete media controls or quick-launch keys.

The bottom line: The Dell Studio s1558-5691MSL offers a little more for your money than competing laptops, though it's a bit bulky and short on battery life for a day in a backpack.

Apple Magic Trackpad

The good: Compact, clean design; responsive multitouch gestures work as smoothly as they do on a MacBook; offers a mouse-free alternative for users who don't have space for a mouse.

The bad: Clickable buttons at corners don't work well if Trackpad isn't placed on a hard surface; limited software customization.

The bottom line: Apple's Magic Trackpad offers all the functionality of a MacBook clickpad in a standalone Bluetooth device. For most people, however, it's not worth the pricey upgrade over an existing mouse.

Apple iMac summer 2010 (Intel Core i3 3.06GHz, 21.5 in)

The good: Strong single-core and multitasking performance for its price; upgraded graphics chip handles most Mac games with ease; SDXC card slot supports higher-capacity cards than older iMacs; best-looking all-in-one on the market.

The bad: No HDMI input; no Blu-ray; native quad-core CPUs better at multithreaded applications; small screen size for its price; runs hot.

The bottom line: Apple has elected to keep its iMac firmly grounded as a productivity device. You'll find few home entertainment conveniences in Apple's new iMac, and you can find larger screens in other all-in-ones for less. Few will offer performance like this iMac, though, and none looks as pretty, which makes it easy to recommend for general-purpose computing and for the design conscious.
