Top 10 films coming to Blu-ray in October

Whether you're building a Blu-ray library or just looking for something cool to watch, here are our top 10 picks for October 2011.

Total Recall really has just about everything: ludicrous action, a storyline that might be all in the actor's head, over-endowed women, a pernicious villain, some of the hammiest Arnie quotes of all time and the most dated special effects money could buy. And, in all seriousness, it's some damned good fun.

Fans around the world wailed a collective Vader-style "Nooooo!" when Firefly, Joss Whedon's space western, got the can. So much of the story was left untold, so you can imagine the collective glee upon the arrival of Serenity, the film that aims to tie up the loose ends, as well as bring back the characters the fans had grown to love.

When Frank Bannister is in a car accident that kills his wife, he develops the strange ability to see ghosts — and with it starts to unravel a dastardly plot from beyond the grave. WoooOOOooo! Written and directed by Peter Jackson and starring Michael J. Fox, The Frighteners is an underrated spookfest that oughtn't be missed.

Although This is Spinal Tap is widely regarded as hilarious, it's important to remember that the point of parody is to hold up a mirror and show us what we are. Even though it was made 25 years ago now, the film is still relevant, showing us how we revere famous people as gods, no matter how daft they are.

FLASH! Aa-aaah! He's saved every one of us! Seriously, if you haven't seen this film, it's awesome. It has a football star flying in to space to save damsels in distress from a rather quite alarmingly Yellow Peril villain, winged warriors and a killer soundtrack by Queen.

Check your brains at the door. Cos zombies, get it?

Poor old Freddy's become a bit of a cheesy cliche these days, but back when we were 12, he was one of the scariest villains ever — because what on earth could you do about a monster that attacked in your sleep? This ox set lets you relive the fear — and what made the Nightmare on Elm Street films such classics in the horror genre.

Superhero films have been really stepping up to the plate recently. Thor wasn't quite as good as Captain America, but it did have some pretty ace moments, particularly if you are a fan of the comics, and managed to sneak in a rare sense of humour to boot.

Stargate opened in 1994 to a very mixed reception at best — who would have known that it would prove the starting point for a long-running TV franchise?
