A Kenmore fridge that's as big as they come (pictures)
Need a whole lot of storage space, but don't want to splurge on a high-end design? This fridge might fit the bill.
Kenmore 23.8 cubic foot Top Freezer Refrigerator (79432)
The Kenmore 79432 is a classic-looking top freezer and a surprisingly strong performer. Click through to see what's so special about it.
As big as they come
Most manufacturers don't make top freezers with much more than 20 cubic feet of total storage space. The 79432 offers almost 24 cubic feet, giving it best-in-class capacity, and plenty of room for your groceries.
Simple controls
It's still a pretty basic fridge though. The controls are located inside the fridge. You can dial up and down between five settings ranging from "cold" to "coldest."
Fridge drawer
You'll find a pantry drawer that runs the width of the fridge. That's a nice feature for a top freezer -- pantry drawers are more commonly found in French door models.
Water dispenser
There's a water dispenser, too, but it's inside of the fridge.
In-door shelf sliders
The in-door shelves offer plenty of width and plenty of vertical clearance. You'll also find plastic sliders to help you section things off.
Crisper bins
There's also a pair of crisper bins at the bottom of the fridge.
Humidity controls
Each crisper comes with its own adjustable humidity vent.
Butter bin
And yep, there's a butter bin at the top of the door. It runs a few degrees warmer than the rest of the fridge by design, to help ensure your butter or margarine is soft and spreadable.
In the freezer
The freezer is pretty basic, though the glass shelf is a nice touch (most top freezers only offer a wire rack, if anything).
Ice maker
You'll also find an ice maker up here.
Default setting
After testing the 79432 at its default setting (right in the middle between "cold" and "coldest"), we came away impressed. The body of fridge held very tight around 37 degrees, with the door and crispers running a few degrees warmer (but not too warm).
Coldest setting
Things were equally consistent at the "coldest" setting, where the body of the fridge averaged closer to 35 degrees.
Worth grabbing?
The Kenmore 79432 retails for $1,420, though you'll likely find it for closer to $1,200 at Sears. Check out our complete review to see whether or not we think it's a worthy top freezer upgrade at that price.
