The other iPad Mini launch in NYC
Uptown in NYC, people lined up around the block to buy Apple's iPad Mini, which was released today. But in downtown Manhattan it was a very different, much quieter scene.
Apple Store on West 14th St. in New York City
While hundreds of people stood in line at the two Apple stores uptown to buy their iPad Minis on Friday, there was no one at the Apple Store on West 14th St. in Manhattan. The store still had sandbags in front of its doors, a sad reminder of the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, which hit New York's shores Monday evening.

There were no lines at the SoHo location of the Apple Store. The store and other businesses in the usually busy neighborhood have been closed since losing power Monday evening due to Superstorm Sandy.
Streets of SoHo
The streets of SoHo were eerily quiet on Friday. Residents and businesses in this part of New York City have been without electricity and adequate cell phone reception since Monday evening.
Businesses in lower Manhattan were still boarded up and closed on Friday afternoon, four days after Hurricane Sandy hit New York's shores.

Give me juice!
A hardware store in the West Village offered power strips so that the thousands of people in the neighborhood who have been without power since Monday evening could charge their cell phones and other gadgets.
Free food
The SoHo restaurant Lure Fishbar offered passersby free food and even small flower bouquets. The restaurant's owner said the food was going to go bad anyway, and he'd rather see it given away to people who might need it. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have been without power since Hurricane Sandy hit on October 29.
A fire hydrant drinking fountain
Many people in lower Manhattan and in other parts of New York City are without water. At 14th Street and 8th Avenue a drinking fountain has been set up. It's attached to a nearby fire hydrant.
