First OLED TV from Philips flashes pretty lights

At the IFA trade show in Berlin, Philips introduced its first TV to use OLED technology, promising the same kind of spectacular image quality seen on LG's OLED TVs like the B6P series.

The 901F has Philips trademark Ambilight feature, where colored lights on the TV's back shine on the wall behind.

Ambilight can be set to correspond with the on-screen image.

In addition to mirroring the on-screen color, seen here as blue contrasting with OLED's perfectly black screen, a user can choose a static, neutral color.

The colors come courtesy of LED lights along three sides of the TV's rear.

In addition to Ambilight, the 901F has an integrated sound system with six forward-firing speakers. Smart TV functionality is provided by Google's Android TV system.

The main appeal of the 901F isn't pretty lights and sound, however. It's OLED picture quality, with similarly superb contrast, wide color and 4K resolution as LG's models. It supports HDR as well, but not Dolby Vision like LG's do.

The 55-inch 910F is coming to Europe at a yet-undisclosed price sometime before the end of the year.
