Take a look at Nanoleaf's new smart bulbs (pictures)

Nanoleaf's been making 3D-printed LED light bulbs with the light-emitting diodes on the outside for a few years now, but now, they're releasing a connected version of that same design -- and it'll work directly with Apple HomeKit.

Like existing Nanoleaf bulbs, the Nanoleaf Ivy smart bulbs are built from a 3D-printed jigsaw assembly with light-emitting diodes peppering the outside.

Each kit comes with two bulbs and a hub to control them.

That dodecahedronal design makes for one of the most unique and attractive-looking hubs we've seen.

In addition to controlling the bulbs using your phone, you can dim them up and down using standard on/off switches. Just flip the switch off and then back to start fading the light up or down. When it's at a level you want, flip the switch off and then back on a second time to lock it in.

You can also turn the light on in a dimmed down nightlight mode using a standard switch. Just flip it on, off, and back on in quick succession.

The app does a good job of walking you through the setup process. Just plug the hub into your router and into power, and the app should detect it. From there, you'll enter its HomeKit pairing code into the app. Then, just screw in your bulbs and tap on the top of the hub to add them to your setup.

The Nanoleaf Hub can control third-party smart bulbs alongside its own lights. It shares Siri support with them, too.

The Nanoleaf Ivy bulbs put out about 700 lumens from a very low power draw of just 7.5 watts, good for about 94 lumens per watt. That's more efficient than any other smart bulb we've tested to date. And, as you can see, the bulb's unique design doesn't stop it from putting out an even, omnidirectional quality of light.
